A Public Health Training Center for the Commonwealth of Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia Public Health Training Center (VPHTC), which was established in 2010 and is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), is a collaborative project with a mission to develop the existing public health workforce as a foundation for improving the infrastructure of the public health system and to help improve the health of all people in Virginia.



Virginia PHTC Goals

  • Design and implement training programs focused upon community-based assessments, community-level interventions and collaborative research projects
  • Develop public health knowledge, skills and attitudes concerning the public health workforce, Family Medicine trainees, and pipeline trainees
  • Design and implement training initiatives across educational pipeline to build the future public health workforce



Legislative Purpose of the PHTC Program

  1. Establish or strengthen field placements for students in public or nonprofit private health agencies or organizations;
  2. Involve faculty members and students in collaborative projects to enahnce public health services to medically underserved communities;
  3. Assess the health personnel needs and assist in the planning and development of training programs to meet such needs
